All security officer certifications are approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Program (DPS PSP License #F24121701). Whether you’re entering the security field for the first time, completing your required in-person firearms qualification, or adding certifications to an existing license, we offer flexible online and in-person options to fit your schedule.
How Texas Security Officer Licensing Works
- New to security work? Start with the Level 2 Unarmed Officer Certification — a 2-hour online course that qualifies you to work as an unarmed guard in Texas.
- Want to carry a firearm? Complete the Level 3 Armed Officer Certification (online, 30 hours) followed by the Level 3 Firearms & Defensive Tactics Course (in-person, 10 hours at our North Richland Hills range). Both are required under HB 3424 before DPS will issue your Level 3 commission.
- Already licensed and need to renew? Take the Level 3 Recertification online (6 hours CE), then complete the in-person firearms course to finish your renewal.
- Ready for executive protection or bodyguard work? The Level 4 PPO Certification is a 15-hour classroom course across 2 consecutive days. You must hold an active Level 3 commission before enrolling.
- Want to add OC spray to your existing license? The DPS Pepper Spray Certification is a 2–3 hour online course available to any currently licensed Texas security officer.

No. The Level 3 online course includes Level 2 training within it. If you’re going straight for your armed
officer license, you can start with Level 3. -
As of January 1, 2024, Texas requires all armed security officers to complete a 10-hour in-person
Firearms and Defensive Tactics course with a DPS-approved instructor. This cannot be completed
online. Our Level 3 Security Guard Firearms & DT Course satisfies this requirement. -
