Every Texas security officer commission expires on the second anniversary of its issue date — which means renewal isn’t a surprise, it’s a calendar entry. The officers who renew painlessly are the ones who treat it that way: continuing education knocked out online, range day booked near their filing date, paperwork submitted with room to spare. That’s exactly the sequence this course is built around.

Start the 6-hour CE tonight if you want — it’s the renewal portion of the Level 3 course, delivered online with instant access, ending in the written exam the state expects. Then one session at the range covers your in-person requalification, which Texas has required of every renewing officer since the start of 2024. Everyone who takes the online recertification course finishes the same way: the in-person Firearms & Defensive Tactics course completes the DPS training requirements. No mystery steps, no discovering a requirement three days before your commission lapses.

Holding a Level 4 too? Same course. Our recertification course is built to comply with the renewal training requirements for both Level 3 and Level 4 — one online course, both licenses covered, then the same in-person range session finishes it. What happens after you finish

Finish your CE online, then book your in-person firearms requalification — you'll leave the range with your Firearm Proficiency Certificate (PSP-31). The state requires an MMPI for renewing commission applicants, but one already on file can satisfy it — it stays valid unless withdrawn or denied, and we'll help you confirm yours before you spend money on another. Then submit your renewal through the TOPS portal. One timing rule to respect: your range qualification must be no more than 90 days old when your renewal application is submitted — book the range close to when you'll file.

Straight answers

When should I start my renewal?

Before your expiration date, with enough runway to finish CE, range, and paperwork without panic. Your TOPS account shows your exact renewal window — log in, check your date, and call us; we'll lay out a schedule that fits it.

Do I really have to shoot in person again?

Yes. Since January 1, 2024, Texas requires renewing officers to complete the firearms portion in person with an approved instructor — the days of fully-online renewals are over, no matter who tells you otherwise. Our range day gets it done in one session.

Do I need to take the MMPI again?

Maybe not. The state requires an MMPI for renewing commission applicants, but an MMPI already on file remains valid unless it was withdrawn or denied. Check your status before paying a provider twice — we'll show you how.

What's the PSP-31 everyone mentions?

The Firearm Proficiency Certificate — the state form documenting your passed requalification, and the document your renewal application needs. You get it at the range when you qualify, and it must be no more than 90 days old when your renewal is submitted.

My commission already expired. Now what?

Can you handle my Level 4 renewal too?

Yes — and you don't need to call us to sequence it. This recertification course is built to comply with the renewal training requirements for both Level 3 and Level 4, so one online course covers you either way — that's deliberate; we build our compliance courses to get you the most for your money. Many schools don't. One requirement stands for everyone: after the online recertification course, you must complete the in-person Level 3 Firearms & Defensive Tactics course to finish out the DPS training requirements — Texas requires that portion in person, and your renewal isn't complete without it.
