Some people want their License to Carry handled the way they handle everything else: show up once, do it right, be done by dinner. This is that class. One in-person day in North Richland Hills covers the state-required classroom course and your live shooting proficiency — the complete training side of the Texas LTC, no homework, no second appointment.

The classroom hours cover exactly what Texas requires — deadly-force law, handgun use and safety (including restraint holsters and securely carrying openly), non-violent dispute resolution, and safe storage with children in mind — taught by DPS-qualified LTC instructors who make the legal material stick without reading statutes at you. Then you walk to the line and shoot your qualification while the instruction is still fresh. It’s the most natural sequence there is, which is why the one-day format remains our most popular LTC option.

Bring your own handgun or reserve a rental at registration; bring questions, because answering them is the fun part of our job; and bring zero experience if that’s what you have — this class was built for first-timers and runs every week like it.

Not part of this purchase

  • The license itself — you apply to Texas DPS with your training certificates, and DPS issues the LTC (standard application fee $40, paid to the state)
  • A handgun, if you don't own one — reserve a rental during registration instead

What happens after you finish

You leave with your classroom and proficiency certificates — the training half of the LTC is done. From there you submit your application to Texas DPS online, upload your certificates, complete fingerprints, and DPS issues the license: an original runs to your first birthday after the fourth anniversary of issue (call it four to five years), renewals run five, and the standard state fee is $40. We hand every student the application walkthrough before they leave the building.

Straight answers

Texas has permitless carry — why get the LTC at all?

Permitless carry didn't end the LTC program, and the state itself lists reasons the license still earns its keep — it can serve as an alternative to the NICS background check when purchasing, it enables carry in states that honor Texas licenses through reciprocity, and it carries premises-related provisions under Texas law. And there's a warning side to the same coin: carrying without a license means carrying without some real protections. Texas's prohibited-places list — school premises, polling places, courts, secured airport areas, 51% bars, and more — is a third-degree felony for most violations, license or not, and federal law makes knowingly possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school a federal crime, up to five years, unless you hold a state-issued license like the LTC or the gun is unloaded and locked. An ordinary drive past a school with a loaded handgun in the console can put an unlicensed carrier inside that federal zone. The class teaches that whole map; whether it's worth a Saturday is your call.

Is everything really finished in one day?

The training is — classroom course and your live shooting proficiency, same visit. The license itself comes from DPS after you apply with your certificates; we send you home with the application walkthrough.

What's the shooting test like?

A 50-round course of fire administered by your instructor at close-to-moderate distances, scored on a standard target — and the class prepares you for it before you shoot it. Most students, including first-timers, pass the same day; if nerves win the first round, we work with you rather than wave goodbye.

I've never fired a gun. Should I be here?

You'll be fine here — but you might be happier in our Intro to Handguns + LTC combo, which spends the morning on fundamentals before the LTC material. If you're unsure which fits, call and describe your comfort level; we'll tell you straight.

Are there discounts?

Yes — teachers, veterans, and first responders get a discounted rate at checkout. Bring the relevant ID to class.

How long will my license last once issued?

An original LTC runs to your first birthday after the fourth anniversary of issuance — four to five years depending on your birthday — and renewals run five years. The standard state fee is $40 either way.
