How to choose a Level 3 security school in Texas
Six questions worth asking every school you're considering, us included, and how Go Strapped answers each one.
Level 3 training has two parts: a classroom portion you can take online, and a firearms and defensive tactics portion that Texas law (HB 3424) requires in person with a DPS-approved instructor. An online price only tells you about the first part. These questions cover the whole path.
-
Is the school licensed by Texas DPS?
Ask: the school's DPS license number. Then look it up yourself on the state's TOPS portal.
Go Strapped: Texas DPS-licensed training school #F24121701, training Texans since 2011.
-
Does the course cover every portion of the PSP-30, or only the online classroom?
Ask: your Level Three Certificate (PSP-30) has three separately signed portions: classroom, self-defense tactics, and firearms. Ask who completes each one, and where the in-person range portion happens.
Go Strapped: our online classroom course covers the classroom portion. Our in-person Firearms & Defensive Tactics class (10 hr, in North Richland Hills, with our DPS-approved instructors) covers the other two: when you pass, we complete and sign them.
-
What will you pay at checkout, booking fees included?
Ask: the amount you'll actually pay at checkout, and what the in-person portion costs on top of the online course.
Go Strapped: online Level 3, $150 course, $159 at checkout, incl. $9 booking fee.
In-person class: $159 at checkout, incl. $9 booking fee, for Go Strapped online students.
-
Who will actually teach you?
Ask: the instructors' names and credentials, and who teaches the in-person portion.
Go Strapped: our own instructors teach our classes.
- Bryan Proctor, Founder & Lead Instructor: Retired Texas peace officer — 20+ years combined military & law enforcement · U.S. Air Force Security Forces combat veteran
- Jessica Proctor, Instructor: DPS-qualified LTC instructor · Texas DPS Level 3 instructor
- Donnie Camp, Instructor: Texas DPS Level 3 instructor · DPS-qualified LTC instructor

What do recent students say?
Ask yourself: how many reviews does the school have, and how recent are they? Read past the star rating.
Go Strapped: 4.9★ across 678 Google reviews. See where to read them →

Already did part of it somewhere else? What does finishing cost?
Ask: if you've already finished an online classroom course, what the in-person portion costs for students who trained elsewhere, and what records you need to bring.
Go Strapped: our in-person class is $250 at the other-provider student rate ($265 at checkout, incl. $15 booking fee). For students who complete an eligible online Level 3 classroom or renewal course with another training provider. Bring your classroom completion certificate or other required completion documentation. Outside course records are subject to verification before participation.
